The NWSL championship game is finally here after what was one of the most exciting playoffs in recent history. Washington Spirit is taking on Gotham FC in the final this Saturday, November 22, at 8 p.m. ET. 

The two rivals are meeting yet again, this time in the finals. The last time they met in the playoffs was just last year, in the semifinals, which went to penalty kicks, where Washington emerged victorious. 

This year, Gotham looks to flip the script as they have had one of the most unprecedented runs in NWSL history. Gotham entered the playoffs as the eight seed and knocked out Kansas City, the number one seed, who had a historic season and was heavily favored to win it all. Next came the reigning champions, Orlando Pride. Gotham turned on the dramatics again by scoring in the last minute of extra time off a free kick by Jaedyn Shaw. 

Gotham is the first eight seed ever to reach the finals.

Washington has found themselves back in the final again after a heartbreaking loss last year against Orlando. While Washington’s post-season hasn’t been as out of the ordinary as Gotham’s, considering they are the second seed, it still has been an exciting one for different reasons. Trinity Rodman made her return to the field after being out with an injury since the middle of October. Spirit fans also saw Croix Bethune score her first NWSL playoff goal after missing all of last post-season due to injury. 

Just like the rest of the playoffs, there is no doubt the championship game will be exciting.
