The new year is finally here, and we can't help but be excited. 2025 promises to be a thrilling year in the soccer world for so many reasons. From the Champions League to EFL League One, our editorial team of Gabrielle Nordstrom and Joseph Reina compiled a comprehensive list of things we are looking forward to in 2025.
Can England repeat as Women’s Euro Champions?
The Women’s Euros are rolling back around this July. Switzerland will be hosting this tournament for the first time in history. Reigning champions England won their first title in the 2022 tournament but might have one of the hardest paths back to the final game. England will have to take on top-ranked teams France and the Netherlands in the group stage before possibly meeting Germany or Sweden in the quarter-finals. Despite a potentially rough path, England is still the second favored team to bring it all home. Who will we see take home the Women’s Euro title?
Champions League embraces its new format
Two games remain before the Champion’s League group stage wraps up, and in its wake, we’ll be treated to the first iteration of this new format’s version of a playoff. 24 teams will qualify for the round of 16 or the knockout phase play-offs based on their final seeding and at this point, only two teams are mathematically safe. Chaos breeds more chaos so if the opening round is anything to go off of, the route to the Final in Munich will be anything but predictable.
SheBelieves Cup
The USWNT is back in its first tournament since winning the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Americans are looking to bring home the title for the sixth year in a row. Since 2016, the USA has won the tournament seven out of nine times. The U.S. will be joined by Japan, Australia, and Colombia at the end of February. The three matchdays are Thursday, Feb. 20, Sunday, Feb. 23, and Wednesday, Feb 26. The games will take place in Texas, Arizona and California.
Will Liverpool hold on to win the Premier League?
The phrase “top at Christmas” is thrown around by Premier League fans, but statistically speaking, only half of the time does the best side on Dec. 25 go on to win the league that season. Arsenal fell behind in each of the past two seasons after leading through the holiday, but this year Liverpool looks poised to end the streak. As of Jan. 9, Arne Slot and his formidable side lead Arsenal in second by six points and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City by a whopping 12, with a game in hand over both. Stranger things have happened, but it feels hard to bet against Liverpool at this point.
U.S. Hosts Club World Cup as a Trial Run for Next Summer’s World Cup
The USA will be hosting 32 of the world’s biggest clubs this summer as a trial run for the 2026 World Cup. This is the first time America has had the honor of hosting the Club World Cup, 12 stadiums across the country will be used. The tournament will be played in just under a month, with the start date on June 14 and the end date on July 13. Manchester City are the reigning champions; will we see them defend their title?
Will Wrexham secure a second successive promotion?
Many predicted success when Hollywood Elites Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over as owners of the oldest club in Wales. Achieving it was another challenge, altogether. Now, four years into this experiment, Wrexham sits third in the EFL League One table, just two points off league leaders Birmingham City. If they finish in the top two, they’ll earn a second successive promotion to the EFL Championship, just one step below the Premier League. Third through sixth would see them face the dreaded playoff. Keep an eye on this salivating drama, before it hits Hulu.
FA Cup Final
The oldest national soccer tournament in the world, the Emirates FA final will take place on Saturday, May 17. Only men’s teams in England take part in the FA Cup. Manchester United and Manchester City faced off in the final last year, United walked away with their 13th FA Cup Championship. With a struggling Manchester City and Manchester United, will we see two new finalists in the big game this season?
Puma takes over as the Official Ball Supplier of the Premier League
Nike became synonymous with the Premier League during their partnership spanning 25 years. From Merlin to Ordem, Total 90 to Flight, the designs are baked into decades of soccer memories for fans around the world, but starting in the fall, Puma will take over. Not much is known about the design, but Puma’s Orbita match ball is already used in several leagues and tournaments around the world including Serie A, La Liga, and Copa America. It’ll take some getting used to, but we have a feeling they’ll pull out all the stops.
MLS Jerseys
The 2025-26 MLS season will be here before you know it. MLS fans have seen some amazing jerseys in recent seasons, which makes this upcoming season even more exciting. Inter Miami has already dropped its away kit for next season, which features a sleek, classic black, grey, and pink design. San Diego also dropped their 2025-25 home kits, a simple black jersey with their logo colors down the side.
Adidas Liverpool jerseys
This season’s title favorites will swap Nike for adidas in 2025. Having partnered with the German brand twice previously and most recently from 2006 to 2012, Liverpool will likely become one of adidas’ biggest club contracts. While we’ll have to wait for the jerseys to be released later this year, the possibilities are endless for some iconic throwbacks including the club’s iconic late 80s and early 90’s jerseys.
Puma Portugal Jerseys
Portugal recently announced their new partnership with Puma, which means new gear is being released. The first drop was their newest home and away kits, along with a jacket and a ball. The classic reds, golds, and greens remain in the newest kits as Puma gets ready to begin a new era of Portugal football.
