Premier League Midseason Update

Premier League Midseason Update

By: Gabrielle Nordstrom

The Premier League officially hit the halfway point of the 2024-25 season during the first weekend of January, and one club is exceeding expectations and are most likely to be on their way to their 20th Premier League title.

Liverpool is the team to beat this season. Their record is 14-4-1 through 19 games. Despite playing one less game than the majority of the other teams, Liverpool is still sitting at the top of the table with 46 points, six points ahead of second place.

Arsenal is in familiar territory in second place behind Liverpool. Arsenal suffered injuries to some of their starting line up, but have been able to stay afloat. They currently have 40 points.

Manchester City is having their worst season under manager Pep Guardiola. The four-time reigning Champions have been plagued with injuries. Ballon d’Or winner, Rodri, only played two matches before tearing his ACL, leaving a wide open gap in City’s midfield. Kevin De Bruyne also suffered through an injury, sidelining him for weeks. Other vital players in the starting line up for City also experienced injuries the first half of the season. Despite their injury crisis, City still remains in the top 10 of the league, coming in at sixth with a record of 10-4-6.

Nottingham Forest has had an impressive season thus far after ending the 2023-24 season in 17th place, on the edge of relegation. Forest currently is in third place with 37 points, already beating their point total from last season. Their midseason record is 11-4-4.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are currently in the bottom half of the table. Both teams have had their struggles so far this season, and neither have reached the 10-win mark yet. Tottenham sits at 12th and United sits at 13th.

Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton currently sit at the bottom of the table, facing relegation if their season continues on their current path. Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently tied with Ipswich Town in points, but just slip past relegation because of tie breakers.

Everton sits near the bottom of the table. They are hoping a newly installed ownership group will put them on the right path to gaining more points and avoiding relegation.

With half the season remaining, there are a lot of unanswered questions and many unpredictable events.

Will Liverpool finish with a title in their hands or will Arsenal find a way to stop them? Where will City end up, will we see a resurgence from them?

Will Ipswich Town be able to jump ahead of Wolverhampton? Will Wolverhampton or Everton drop to relegation?

What are your predictions for the remainder of the season?
