How to Style a Soccer Jersey

Wearing a soccer jersey is among the most trendy looks in modern casual fashion. Showing off your love for the beautiful game has never been easier and more widely accepted,  but for many, it can still be a daunting task. There are a few best practices when it comes to styling a soccer jersey that can help you go from beginner to pro in no time.

First thing first: Start with the shirt. Every jersey is unique and brings its own strengths to the table. It’s important to start by finding the top that fits you best and building your outfit around it—the most important aspects to pay attention to will be colors, materials, and style. We’ll use some of this season’s latest jerseys as examples of different looks to choose from and how they might complement other pieces of your wardrobe.

This year’s Borussia Dortmund 3rd kit exemplifies a sleek and subtle look that invites conformity. The white with black and yellow accents calls for black shorts and similarly colored footwear. Don’t overload the look. Simple jerseys work best as part of a simple look. The collar also helps the shirt work better with nicer shorts or pants.
Is your jersey colorful and flashy? Let it sing with muted bottoms.  For example, take Ajax’s new away jersey. The several shades of blue mixed with a tertiary yellowish-cream color can make matching a nightmare, so let your top stick out as the main attention grabber. Pair your flair with white shorts and shoes, especially if your white shoes have understated hints that match the jersey.

Typical streetwear pieces, like light-wash jeans or baggy pants, work great with an oversized jersey, provided they accent each other. Arsenal’s home kit for 2024/25 accents these colors very well with a classic, yet simple design. It also leaves lots of room for shoes to match the white, blue, or red colors on the shirt.

Now that we’ve covered choosing a jersey, let’s work on the rest of the outfit. For casual wear, there is one major rule to not break: DO NOT wear matching team shorts. Any sort of soccer-specific short has this effect. Find a pair of athletic shorts, baggy jeans, board shorts, or almost anything else and you’ll avoid the “full-kit” look that we want to avoid.

Before we’re ready to take our new fit into the world, it can be helpful to add some accessories like jewelry for a subtle pop or a jacket to help accent the rest of your outfit. Remember that colors matter, so mix and match until you find an outfit that feels like you. It can take time so don’t be afraid to take some risks and experiment with your favorite tops.

If you already have a more muted jersey, consider getting something that adds a new dimension to your wardrobe. New jerseys are constantly being released and are available at soccerpost.com or in-store, so follow our social media to find your new favorite jersey!
