Who is Going to the UCL Final?

The UEFA Champions League Semifinals have arrived! Only two matchups and four games remain before we have the marquee showpiece to determine who will be crowned the kings of Europe for 2026! But which teams will be marching on to the Final?

Atlético Madrid vs Arsenal

In the first semifinal here, we have an extremely interesting tie between two teams who are not in the best of form, which adds a high degree of unpredictability to these games. Throughout this year, uncertainty has defined Atlético Madrid’s season. Diego Simeone has been trying to revolutionize the team since last summer’s transfer window after an injection of cash allowed them to sign several big-name forwards.

No longer are they tied to their stereotypical, pragmatic defensive style; they are now trying to play dynamic attacking soccer. Of course, there have been some growing pains. Atléti played phenomenally over the two Champions League Quarterfinal legs to eliminate Barcelona, but they also shockingly lost the Copa del Rey Final to Real Sociedad. It remains to be seen what version of los Colchoneros will show up in the Semifinals.

Their opponents will be Arsenal, a team with huge ambitions this season. Under Mikel Arteta’s six-year project, he has turned Arsenal into a defensive goliath and, overall, one of the best teams in the world. But for all the improvement he has brought, trophies have not followed suit aside from a lone FA Cup in 2020.

With the pressure mounting, there is a heavy expectation that Arsenal must win either the Premier League or the Champions League this year. And after a crucial loss to Manchester City in the Premier League and a long string of disappointing performances, anything besides a win against Atlético here will be considered an absolute failure. In fact, these two teams played each other in the League Phase, and Arsenal ran away as 4-0 victors.

As solid as Arsenal’s defense is, their attack has not been as potent due to a combination of injuries and poor form from their forwards. With La Liga realistically out of reach, the Champions League is Atlético’s only hope for silverware, but inconsistency has been its worst enemy as of late.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich

While the other matchup is between two teams who are in erratic form, this semifinal is shaping up to be a firecracker between what are probably the two best teams in the world right now. PSG need little introduction; they are the defending champions of both France and Europe after their historic treble last year. While this season has been more error-laden and perhaps not as concise, they seem to be hitting form at the right time of this Champions League season.

One only needs to look at their last two rounds against Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively, where PSG scored a combined 12 goals over those four matches. This goalscoring return is hardly a surprise when looking at their depth in attack, specifically on the wings. Even though Ligue 1 hasn’t been officially wrapped up, it’s obvious the Champions League is the trophy this team desires most.

Awaiting PSG is the German juggernaut in Bayern Munich, who just recently won yet another Bundesliga title following a dominant win over Stuttgart. Bayern is always one of the strongest teams on the continent, but this season, they look truly special. With a well-rounded team capped off by their electric front-three of Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Michael Olise, all of whom are Ballon d’Or contenders, the Bavarians have shown no mercy in all competitions.

Their biggest test came in the last round of the Champions League against Real Madrid. While the Spanish giants proved that Bayern are not invincible, they still fell short of their German opponents in that heavyweight matchup, leading many to believe the momentum from that crucial victory can carry Bayern all the way to glory.

One can argue that both teams’ weakness is their defense, which often allows more goals than desired. On the flip side, PSG and Bayern have the most potent attacking lineups in the world. Regardless of who comes out on top, it looks like yet another multi-goal thriller should be on the cards.
