USMNT Olympic Run Ends in Quarterfinals

The USMNT’s Olympic run has come to an end after a 4-0 loss to Morocco.

The Americans always seemed to be one step behind Morocco and could not quite keep up.

Morocco converted first off a penalty kick taken by Soufiane Rahimi 30 minutes into the game. The score remained 1-0 through the first half.

When the second half began, the USMNT seemed to have gained their legs and were connecting with better passes. They had more opportunities and were able to control the play.

Despite the USA playing better, Morocco netted another goal  which seemed to make that better play come to a skidding stop. Morocco added a third goal minutes later, putting the nail in the coffin for the USA. Ilias Akhomach scored the second goal while Achraf Hakimi found the back of the net for the third.

Morocco was given another penalty in the dying minutes of the game after a handball in the box. Medhi Maouhoub converted and made it 4-0.

Aside  from a few minutes at the beginning of the second half, the US players could not seem to control the play and connect with their teammates. They did not seem comfortable the entire game, they had bouncing balls, misplaced passes, not shifting as a unit, bad touches and many little mistakes throughout the match.

The Americans did not produce more than one shot on net, compared to Morocco’s eight shots.

The Moroccan defense shut down any chances USA had, not allowing them to make through balls, play into the wings or convert on any set pieces.

This young USA team will be back as they have just turned the corner and should continue to get better in the future.

Morocco dominated the entire game with strong wing play,  quick defensive pressure, pass connections, and off-ball movement. They played a perfect game from start to finish.

Morocco is the first men's team to make it through to the semifinals. They await their opponent who they will meet on Monday, August 5, at 12pm.
