Only four teams remain in the 2025 NWSL playoffs, all fighting for the championship. The semifinals are set and promise an exhilarating weekend for soccer fans.
The headline of the opening round was number eight seed NJ/NY Gotham FC taking down KC Current, who came into the playoffs as the heavy favorite to win this year’s championship. Gotham scored in the last minute of extra time and pushed themselves through to the next round, knocking out the number one seed.
Gotham is the first-ever number eight seed to win a playoff game in the history of the NWSL.
Orlando Pride, the reigning champions, won their quarterfinal game 2-0 against Seattle Reign. They came into the playoffs as the number four seed and have their sights set on a repeat run.
On Sunday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. ET, Orlando and NJ/NY will face off against each other. The team that wins will advance to the final.
Washington Spirit, the number two seed, went to penalty kicks against Racing Louisville and won 3-1. Spirit was in the finals last year against Orlando. They are looking to bounce back this year and take the title.
Portland Thorns, the number three seed, went to extra time against San Diego Wave, winning 1-0 and making it through to the semifinals.
Washington versus Portland will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15 at noon ET.
Ironically, the four semifinalists have each won the last four NWSL titles–Orlando in 2024, NJ/NY in 2023, Portland in 2022, and Washington in 2021.
With Orlando and Washington not playing each other in the semifinal round, we may get a rematch of last year’s championship game.
Who will we see in the final?
