An enigmatic right winger with an electric left foot, who rose up through the ranks of La Masia, now wears Barcelona’s #10 and the entire world of football is at his feet. Sound familiar? While it is often unfair to compare young players to Lionel Messi, the strong parallels between the Argentine maestro and Barcelona’s new superstar, Lamine Yamal, are undeniable. Yes, he is his own individual and will chart his own path, but at the very least, adidas has found their new footballing icon for when Messi inevitably hangs up his own F50s.
But where did it all start? Just like Messi and countless other Barcelona talents, Yamal developed his skills at La Masia, the famous academy that has fueled Barcelona’s success for decades. But unlike other players, Yamal’s gifts were apparent at a very young age. On April 29, 2023, Yamal officially made his first team debut coming off the bench in a 4-0 victory against Real Betis, making him the youngest player to play for the Blaugrana in over a century. While he was known to Barcelona fans as a player to watch, and he even picked up a league title that year, it was the following season that Lamine Yamal announced himself to the world.
Unfortunately for Barcelona, the team that was so solid in 2023/24 began to unravel, resulting in a very poor campaign overall, especially in La Liga. A combination of injuries to some of their star forwards, as well as inconsistent form from others, saw Yamal ease his way into the starting XI. In August, he dazzled with a great performance against Villarreal and then scored his first goal for Barcelona against Granada in October, justifying his spot in the team.
There’s always a concern in Barcelona about overplaying young talent, but midway through the season, Yamal became so integral to the squad that he became un-droppable. By the season’s end, he was truly the brightest spark in a relatively dark period for Barcelona. While his team ultimately went trophyless, Yamal still racked up over 50 appearances across all competitions and broke numerous records.
Over the summer, with the Spanish National Team, the diminutive winger took his game to another level. Yamal played a huge role in Spain’s emphatic victory at Euro 2024, dishing out some phenomenal performances along the way; most notably, his long-range curler in the semifinal against France, which equalized the match, and his assist to Nico Williams to open the score in the Final against England. While that Spanish team had a long list of standout performers, Yamal was arguably the most exciting player at the Euros that summer.
Things only got even better for Yamal once he reconvened with Barcelona for the 2024/25 season. With Hansi Flick replacing Xavi at the helm and bringing his footballing revolution to Catalan shores, Yamal benefited greatly from this tactical change. No longer was he alone expected to create magic up top; he was now part of a deadly trio alongside a re-energized Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, who was finally fulfilling his potential.
With the support of a talented midfield behind them, this front-three was devastating to defensive lines all across Spain and Europe, with Yamal individually recording 18 goals and 21 assists. It wasn’t just the number of goals and assists, though; it was the quality and the importance of them as well.
Some of Barcelona’s most iconic moments of this outstanding season belonged to the young winger. Look at his goal against Monaco, Barcelona’s first of the Champions League season, his unbelievable mazy dribble and curler against Inter Milan, his long-range effort against Benfica, or his overall great performances in the four matches against Real Madrid, all of which Barcelona won.
This season is also where he truly defined himself as a player, growing into his role as a right winger who can cut in on his left. His shooting improved significantly, but even more extraordinary were his pinpoint crosses, vision for chance creation, and trademark dribbling skills, all doused in his unique flair and finesse. While the comparisons to Messi were well-known early on, Lamine Yamal arguably resembles a young Neymar Jr. more, with his characteristics as a tricky winger, and the child-like joy he brings to the pitch, making these world-class stadiums feel like street futsal pitches instead.
By the end of the 2024/25 season, Barcelona had won the domestic double and the Spanish Super Cup, and narrowly missed out on the Champions League Final, finishing with one of the club’s best seasons in a decade. Yamal also lit up the stage at the 2025 UEFA Nations League, where Spain reached the final but missed out on the trophy after a tight penalty shootout loss to Portugal.
For all his efforts, Yamal finished 2nd in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings, still aged only 18. He also signed a sponsorship deal with adidas, creating a new signature F50 line. Looking back at his first appearance for Barcelona back in April 2023, it is astonishing to witness one of the most meteoric rises of any player in this era of the sport. The question is, where does Lamine Yamal go from here?
Like the rest of Barcelona’s team, there was some burnout from last year's high success, resulting in inconsistent form and on-and-off injuries. Still, Yamal's world-class talent is evident to all, and he remains one of the best players in the world. When he dons the famous Barcelona #10 jersey and features in Spain’s upcoming World Cup campaign this summer, remember that we could be witnessing the first few chapters of one of the all-time greats.
