Alex Morgan has impacted the game in unimaginable ways, and now she’s being honored and enshrined into the San Diego Wave’s history forever. Morgan will have her jersey retired Sunday, September 7, when the Wave takes on the Houston Dash at 8:30 p.m. ET. She is the first player to have their number retired by the club.

Morgan was looked at as the face of the franchise in San Diego. Many credit her with helping the Wave become what it is today.

Generations of soccer players know Morgan’s legacy on and off the field. In 50 games with the club, she scored 23 goals and notched nine assists. In 2022, the club’s inaugural season, she won the NWSL Golden Boot with 16 goals. She’s also the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Morgan was one of the first players to sign with San Diego in 2021. This was a massive moment for the Wave  as one of the world’s soccer legends took a chance on them. Her last game with the club was just about a year ago on September 8, 2024. Since then, she has become a minority investor in the team.

The Alex Morgan Foundation is also a significant part of Morgan’s legacy. Her foundation has and continues to promote equity and opportunities for women and girls in the sport of soccer.

Along with being an icon during her time with San Diego, she is also a legend with the United States National Women’s Team. She is a two-time world champion and a gold medalist with the USWNT. In 224 caps, she has 123 goals, ranking fifth all-time.

There are not many players who have had a greater impact on the game than Morgan did. Her top-level play and advocacy for the game is a significant part of why the women’s game is where it is today. Morgan’s legacy is etched in women’s soccer history forever, and her impact will help continue to grow the game, even without her on the pitch: a true legend and a role model for many soccer players.

The jersey retirement ceremony, a historic moment in San Diego Wave history, will take place after the game, which is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 p.m. ET. Congratulations to Alex Morgan from Soccer Post on her storied career!
