USMNT Back in Olympics After 16 Years

For the first time since 2008, the USMNT is headed back to the Olympic games.

For the men’s part of the tournament, it is restricted to players under 23-years old, unlike the women’s part of the tournament. The teams are allowed to have three overage players.

Twenty five players were invited to camp before the tournament to take part in training and one send-off match before the final roster for the Olympics was named. After falling 2-0 to Japan, head coach Marko Mitrovic named his final 18 players.

Goalkeepers: Patrick Schulte, Gaga Slonina

Defenders: Maximilian Dietz, Nathan Harriel, Miles Robinson, John Tolkin, Caleb Wiley, Walker Zimmerman

Midfielders: Gianluca Busio, Benjamin Cremaschi, Jack McGlynn, Djordje Mihailovic, Tanner Tessmann

Forwards: Paxten Aaronson, Taylor Booth, Duncan McGuire, Kevin Paredes, Griffin Yow

Alternates: Josh Atencio, Jacob Davis, Johan Gomez, John Pulskamp

Including the alternates on the roster, 11 clubs from the MLS are being represented, along with seven overseas clubs.

Zimmerman, Robinson and Mihailovic were the overage players selected to represent the USA in the Olympics this year. Zimmerman looks to bring experience and leadership to the group as he took part in the 2022 World Cup. Similar to Zimmerman, Robinson is there to bring veteran knowledge as he once scored the game-winning goal in the Concacaf Gold Cup final in 2021. Mihailovic has less experience with the USMNT compared to Zimmerman and Robinson but has been part of two Concacaf rosters and is having a tremendous season back in the MLS with the Colorado Rapids, scoring 10 goals and adding six assists.

The men will take on France in the opening match on July 24, followed by playing New Zealand and Guinea in the next two games.

The USMNT look to show the world why they are back in the Olympic games and bring home a medal to their country.
