Spain Continues Their Winning Summer with a Gold Medal

A golden team continues their winning summer. Spain brings the gold medal home with a 5-3 win over France just a month after Spain's senior team won the Euro Championship.

France scored the opening goal of the game 11 minutes in, a goal that Spain’s goalkeeper Arnau Tenas would want back.  The first goal did not matter to Spain as they answered back with their own seven minutes later.  They continued to put the pressure on and scored two more within ten minutes of the first. Tenas then made up for his earlier lackluster goalkeeping with worldly saves including one off a French header in added time of the first half to keep the score 3-1.

Tenas continued to put on a show in the second half as France put the pressure on. He ended his game with eight saves and a gold medal.

France dominated possession in the second half, but were lacking a sense of urgency. With time ticking down and still losing by two goals, France had to create more pressure.

Maghnes Akliouche, a French midfielder, gave his team hope with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Michael Olise took a free kick that deflected off Akliouche and found the back of the net, putting France within one.

France then got awarded a penalty kick in added time. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up to the spot and scored, tying the game 3-3 and sending it to extra time.

Despite France looking like the better team the entire second half and had all of the momentum, Sergio Camello was the difference maker in extra time as he added two goals for Spain, giving them the lead. Spain won the game 5-3 and left with a gold medal.

For the first time in 32 years, Spain stands on the top of the podium.
