After a grueling eight-month MLS campaign, 495 matches are in the books and just 15 remain. Many teams are still fighting for something, whether it be the final playoff positions, better seeding, or avoiding the Wooden Spoon. To help separate the signal from the noise, here are three things you need to know ahead of the final day of MLS matches.
1) Western Conference Final Playoff Positions
Just four teams have yet to seal their playoff fate. FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids, and San Jose Earthquakes are separated by just three points, with the top two teams earning a place in the win-or-go-home Wildcard Game. As it stands, Dallas and RSL hold the top two spots with 41 and 40 points, respectively, but Colorado’s 40 and San Jose’s 38 mean any slip-ups from the leaders could see the chasing pack jump up the order.
Dallas will travel to Vancouver, who need just one point to secure the #1 seed in the West, while Salt Lake City hits the road to take on already eliminated St. Louis City SC. Colorado hosts 3rd-place LAFC, and San Jose welcomes 6th-place Austin FC to PayPal Park. The Rapids need a better result than RSL, while the Earthquakes need a win and some magic to avoid missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season. Western Conference games kick off in unison at 9:00 p.m. ET.
2) Will Nashville and Orlando Jump or Slump?
All nine Eastern Conference playoff teams are set, but their final seeding is very much not. Fourth through ninth place are separated by just five points, ensuring that every team has the opportunity to either escape the wildcard game or clinch home field advantage for round one by finishing fourth.
Orlando and Nashville are the two teams to watch, as they both could feasibly finish in any of the five remaining positions. Orlando will travel to already-eliminated Toronto FC, while Nashville hosts third-place Inter Miami, who could still finish as high as second. Other games to keep an eye on in this seeding battle will be Charlotte vs Philadelphia, NYCFC vs Seattle, Chicago vs New England, and Columbus vs New York Red Bulls. Eastern Conference games kick off in unison at 6:00 p.m. ET.
3) Wooden Spoon Race
Three teams are still mathematically in contention for the Wooden Spoon, recognizing the team with the worst MLS Regular Season record. DC United currently sits last with 25 points, while Atlanta United and the LA Galaxy both have 27 points. Sporting Kansas City has 27 points as well, but its higher win total ensures that they are no longer in danger.
On Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET, DC United travels to Atlanta knowing that only a win for the visitors would stave off their fifth Wooden Spoon. If DC does win, the Galaxy’s home game against Minnesota United at 9:00 p.m. ET would decide whether they or Atlanta claim the league’s most undesired accolade, with goal difference likely to be the tiebreaker.
