Men's Semifinals Brings All the Excitement - Spain and France Move on

The excitement of the men’s tournament continues as Spain and France will battle it out for a gold medal.

Spain v Morocco

Spain took down Morocco with a last minute goal by Juanlu Sanchez to win 2-1. Morocco was up 1-0 on a Soufine Rahimi penalty kick for 65 minutes until Fermin Lopez tied the game, giving Spain all the momentum they needed.

Morocco played a very good game and looked like a team that could win a gold medal all throughout the tournament, but Spain was just that much better.

Morocco made life tough for themselves, considering their only shot on goal came from the penalty spot. Their Spanish counterparts managed five during the contest, the second most Morocco gave up all tournament.

Spain is into the final with eight different goal scorers, but all eyes will be on Lopez and his four goals throughout the Olympics.

Will Lopez be able to bring Spain to a gold medal?

France v Egypt

France with an impressive last minute surge pushes them through to the gold medal game.

Similar to the Spain and Morocco game, Egypt player Mahmoud Saber gave them a 1-0 lead 62 minutes into the game. It seemed like Egypt was going to be on their way to a final until France’s Michael Olise found Jean-Philippe Mateta splitting the defenders and finding the back of the net to tie the game at 83 minutes.

After heading into extra time, France netted two more goals to make the final score 3-1.

Without a doubt, France will heavily rely on Olise and Mateta in the final. Olisa has been setting his teammates up left and right, having a total of four assists, while also scoring two of his own. Mateta currently has four goals throughout the Olympics and is looking for more.

The stat line that really stands out is the number of shots these two players have had. For the tournament, Olisa has a total of 15 shots while Mateta has 16. If Spain wants to beat France, they will have to figure out how to shut these two players down.

The gold medal game will be on Friday, August 9 at 12 p.m. ET. Who will take home gold?
