Top teams Germany and Spain are both looking to bring an Olympic bronze medal home, but only one can.  Germany and Spain will take the field on Friday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. ET.

As two of the best teams in the world, this should be a very entertaining and even match. These two teams have had similar times in the Olympics.

Spain went undefeated through the tournament until their most recent match against Brazil. In the quarterfinals, they seemed to struggle against Colombia as they were taken to penalty kicks. This was the first sign of a possible issue for Spain as they just barely made it out of the quarterfinals.

Despite beating them 2-0 in the group stage, Spain struggled massively against Brazil as they lost 4-2. Now Spain can only battle for a bronze medal.

As reigning World Cup Champions, the expectations for Spain were high, but no World Cup Champion has won the following Olympics.

Germany went up against the United States again after losing to them 4-1 in the group stage. Germany was missing two key players, Lea Schuller and Alexandra Popp. Without these two players, the Americans were favored.

Despite playing without two of their best players, Germany managed to keep themselves in the game and bring it to extra time. The United States’ Sophia Smith broke the tie in extra time, the only goal scored in the game.

With a 1-0 loss against the United States, Germany found themselves in the third place game, battling for a bronze medal.

Germany won the gold medal in 2016 and has three bronze medals. Spain can top off their Olympic debut with a bronze medal.

These two teams will play on Friday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. ET., battling for a bronze medal.
