One of the most iconic boots in all of football, the adidas Predator.
Since 1994, the Predators have made appearances all over the world, from highlight reel plays to the feet of those lifting trophies over their heads.
Before the current Predator everyone knows and loves, adidas made 19 other versions of the boot, each with their own history and superstar moments. Each version was a monumental stepping stone in the evolution to the cleat we know today.
The Predator started as a simple, classic design featuring red, white, and black colors. As time went on adidas moved away from that design as they tried new ways to improve the cleat. Many loved the original look of the Predators and were sad to see that classic look slowly disappear over time, but adidas has quietly been bringing back the look of the early generations.
With the newest version of the Predator, that iconic look of the first ever Predator has returned. The latest era is focused on comfortability and goalscoring. The iconic foldover tongue which was introduced in 1995 has made its return! The foldover tongue hasn’t been a part of the Predator since 2009. With its return, the in-step striking zone size increased, allowing the player to have the best possible shot.
adidas has used modern technologies in their newest boot, including Strikeskin which is rubber fins made from a synthetic material. These rubber fins are placed in strike zones, enhancing ball control and adding spin to the player’s shot. The three stripes from the 1998 Predator Accelerator bring back a nostalgic look to this new boot.
The Controlframe 2.0 is a lightweight soleplate technology used to improve dynamic movement and stability. The soleplates have the ‘Predator’ branding across them, a new feature used to enhance the look of the boot.
Hybridtouch 2.0 upper, a technology used before with adidas, is a molded fit that cushions the ball for the best first touch.
As cleats continue to grow, collars continue to get more popular. The Stretchable laceless primeknit collar allows the player to easily put the boot on and keep their foot feeling secure.
As the game grows, the importance of how much a boot weighs continues to be acknowledged. The newest generation of the Predator is the lightest boot to date, weighing six ounces in a normal adult size.
Players like Jude Bellingham, Pedri, Gabriel Jesus and many more can be seen on the field sporting the newest version of the Predators.
