Host City Local Soccer Playbook: Kansas City

When you're visiting Kansas City this summer, make sure you know the local soccer playbook. Where are the best soccer bars? Where can I play a pickup game? What names do I need to know? We asked our local experts to help create the ultimate soccer fan playbook so you can focus on the action and enjoy KC like a local!

Best Place To Watch A Game Live

Home to the KC Current, CPKC Stadium is the first soccer stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team in the world, and on gamedays, it gets rowdy. With the Missouri River on the north side, the pregame walk is electric, the fans are loud and friendly, and it often ends with a Current win!

Best Soccer Bar In Town

Strange Days Brewing Co. is close to downtown and the streetcar line, as well as CPKC Stadium, so it's great for Current game days and any other occasion when you need to watch soccer and drink.

Best Place To Play Soccer

With its rich ties to KC soccer history, the world-famous Kansas City Soccer Dome is a must-visit stop. This facility has been around since at least the mid 90s and still serves as the training facility for the MASL’s Kansas City Comets

Local Soccer Legend

We can’t ignore Preki, who became the first two-time MLS MVP with the Kansas City Wizards, but Matt Besler represents what the Sporting KC "Homegrown Player" model can do. He started with a local youth club, was recognized by the Wizards at the time, and became club captain for Sporting KC, winning the 2013 MLS Cup and the 2015 & 2017 US Open Cups. Besler carried his hot mid-2010s form into the 2014 World Cup, where he played in all 4 USMNT Games.

KC's Can’t-Miss Eats

Ask any local, and they’ll tell you KC BBQ is the best in the world. It’s hard to go wrong with any local joint, but a Z-Man at Joe’s KC BBQ is a must, and Ted Lasso’s favorite, Arthur Bryant's, has that local feel you can’t fake. If you go to CPKC Stadium, you can even get a Z-Man while you enjoy a game!

Local Tips

“While the games will take place away from the city center, Kansas City will be hosting tons of events for guests at its fan fest near the World War I Memorial. You can take the streetcar practically anywhere downtown, and shuttles will take you from the fan fest to the actual stadium.”
