Built to Fly: Breaking Down Speed Boots

By: Gael Meza

2026 was a major year for boot innovation. All 3 of the major brands completely revamped their flagship speed silos. The Nike Mercurial Superfly 11 Elite, adidas F50 Hyperfast Elite, and PUMA Ultra Nitro 7 Ultimate all have the same goal—top-tier pace!. Still, each takes a different approach to what actually makes a player faster. Here’s a closer look at the technology in each boot, how it fits, and what kind of player it suits.

What exactly has changed this generation?

For most of the last decade, improving a speed boot primarily came down to decreasing weight. This was achieved by building the plate out of lighter plastics and making the upper as thin as possible. Now there is a third form of improvement – underfoot cushioning. Two of these three boots now utilize a type of foam originally designed for running shoes: Nike with ZoomX and PUMA with NITROFOAM Elite. The goal being energy return on push-off, not necessarily comfort. adidas, however, stayed true to its formula and focused on a minimal, layered upper and overall weight.

Nike Mercurial Superfly 11 Elite

The all-new Superfly 11 pairs its signature forefoot AirZoom unit with ZoomX foam cushioning, making this silo the first time Nike has ever used ZoomX in a soccer cleat. The AirZoom sits just under the ball of your foot, where load is scientifically at its highest during acceleration. The upper moves from the older-generation Gripknit to an all-new FlyWeave Ultra, a woven-like material zoned from heel to toe. Compared to Gripknit, FlyWeave Ultra is more structured and keeps your foot centered over the AirZoom unit during acceleration, so you get full use of the new forefoot technology. Reviewers describe this boot as having a narrower fit, so wide-footed players should try it on before buying.

adidas F50 Hyperfast Elite

Possibly the most complex boot on the list is the F50 Hyperfast Elite, featuring a three-layered upper. HALOSKIN+ is the thin outer layer finished with a precision-grip coating for a snappy touch. The inner HALOSHELL+ serves as the base of the upper, while significantly reducing weight and exposing the inner layer. Lastly, the layer closest to your foot would be the strategically placed HALOCAGE+ TPU skin-like material. It is engineered to structure your foot as efficiently as possible, allowing athletes to make speedy, explosive movements without compromise.

PUMA Ultra Nitro 7 Ultimate

This boot is the first in PUMA history to feature NITROFOAM Elite, the signature nitrogen-infused foam used in their running line, placed in the sockliner and footbed. The ULTRAWEAVE upper was re-engineered to be lighter than the ULTRA 6 while also adding additional performance features such as GripControl Pro and 3D Grip Zones for clean ball control. Underneath the boot, PUMA uses the SPEEDSYSTEM 2.0 outsole, composed of data-mapped FastTrax 2.0 studs reshaped to be rounder than the previous version. PUMA also reworked the fit with a snugger forefoot, a lower instep, and a redesigned collar.

Which one to choose?

Choosing between these three silos ultimately comes down to fit and preference. If you want new energy-return technologies that boost your burst, consider the new Superfly 11 and Ultra 7. If you’d rather feel as much of the ball as possible, while also feeling like there is virtually nothing on your feet, the F50 Hyperfast is built with that in mind. Fit varies significantly across all three silos, so definitely stop by your local Soccer Post to test them before purchasing.
